Overview
FTTx ignites a technology shift from the existing copper cabling systems to fiber,
which provides almost unlimited transmission rates. Since fiber networking is a proven
broadband technology with virtually no limits, it can be expanded any time to meet
bandwidth demand of individual customers over the upcoming years. In this FTTx
solution guide, ZyXEL provides solutions for all possible forms of fiber infrastructure and
ways to leverage existing DSL deployments for the best synergy.
FTTx Creates Business Opportunities
FTTx operation in Next Generation Access (NGA) services will
increase ARPUs reliably by +30% above DSL (Yankee Group,
2008). Additionally, FTTx revenue is increasing thanks to the
cooperation with the entertainment industry where high-
quality online services and content are offered, while the
ultra-high bandwidth provided by FTTx also enables video
conferencing and unified communications services for both
commercial and residential users.
Driving Force of FTTx: High-definition IPTV is one of the key
drivers of FTTx, with which 2+ simultaneous HD streams for
multi-room IPTV services will become the major trend in
the upcoming years. Green environment issues are another
driving force because fiber deployment produces less CO2
than copper wires.

Benefits of FTTx
Blazing-fast Services for an Edge
The FTTx solution is the most popular next-generation
broadband access solution adopted by leading service
providers worldwide. It is offering not only symmetric
100Mbps or 1000Mbps bandwidth to homes, but also high-
definition IPTV, video-on-demand, music-on-demand,
home monitoring and control, high-resolution 3D format
video and even more premium triple-play services. Service
providers can choose the best FTTx solution to retain
existing subscribers and win more under future extension,
market competition and economic considerations.
